These necklaces are made by the Batwa of Job's tears (scientific name: Coix lacryma-jobi). They are traditionally worn by Batwa criss-crossed across their chest - and they're used in cultures around the world! The Batwa hand-bead each necklace and they are one of their biggest sources of income, especially to women who do not weave baskets.
The necklaces can be worn wrapped around the neck two to three times, or as is in a longer style.
They come in an all-gray and gray-and-red (which alternate Job's tear's with flame tree seeds), and we have one necklace that is doubled up with a medium strand of all-gray and a shorter, connected strand of red-and-gray. GORGEOUS and UNIQUE!
Our Long necklaces measure 23-26" long as worn (ie. f they HAD clasps, then the full length of the strand is double this). Medium necklaces measure 18-20" long as worn. For the "double" red-and-gray necklace we have, the front strand (red-and-gray) is 13" and the back strand (all gray) measures 17.5" long as worn.
All-red flame tree necklaces are also available on a separate inventory listing:
